Italo Marchiony, who emigrated from Italy in the late 1800s, created his ice cream cone in New York City. He was granted a patent in December 1903 for a machine which made ice cream containers. He used the device to roll warm waffles into cone-shaped containers for his ice cream.
In 1902, Italian businessperson and ice cream manufacturer Antonio Valvona from Manchester, UK, patented a machine for baking biscuit cups for ice cream. Examination of the patent drawings illustrates that both inventions were for edible ice cream cups with flat bottoms and tapered sides.
